Of Healing & Heritage

The words “Doimhneacht an Dúchas” mean “the depth of heritage”. Just as a tree needs to be deeply anchored to withstand the storms of life, let us consider how deeply we can be nourished by our knowledge of the depth of the present : our shared cultural heritage & lived and embodied experience in place. In this, language, the Irish language is a robust allie allowing us to shift into a shared narrative space of perception that has its origins in a time before time.

When we approach the culture of Ireland, it would seem that much has been commodified, and the complex and wayward attributes diluted to conform to cookie cutter demands of a homogeneity and relativism that would deny the subtle specificities of language or culture.

The word “embodied” is important as it suggests a way of knowing that includes ‘being’ and not simply the dominant model of the intellect which by its nature is de-centering – as it brings us, collectively, out of the relational heart that is the location of our true power, creativity and imagination. Much of the way of conventional knowledge is disempowering in so far as it is commodified and, increasingly, becoming a form of ‘data’.

If we are to move towards greater capacity for shared humanity, compassion and depth rather than the homogeneity that seeks to divide and define – it is helpful to include the fact that, yes, we are bodies in place, and as such, we are creative, conscious and spirited agents within the materiality of a living earth.

I have another site that I created to share about a creative engagement with the Irish language here and also a page of a working document here

I am offering a six week journey that has been designed to introduce the cultural heritage of Ireland for those who are longing for an embodied connection to land, language and ancestors. Guided through the elements of earth, air, fire, water and ether, this is a unique offering that seeks to restore our connection to the deep wellsprings of our shared humanity as expressed in the inherited imagination of Ireland’s heritage and culture. This is an invitation to join me to share through songs, stories, poetry, music, the knowledge of traditional crafts, and to encounter forgotten ways of knowing and being in a living earth imbued with a spirit of wonder and reverence. This is the journey of the elements that are within each of us but yet animate our landscape through holy wells and ancient megalithic monuments to an ancient cosmic consciousness, of sacred fire and the power of language. Drawing from the well of that which affirms the foundations of a life lived in awe and wonder of the living earth, perception of a unity of man and nature as sacred presence. Exploring the roots of indigenous spirituality and the strident devotion of an early christian Ireland that saved Europe through the dark ages. As our world teeters on the brink of division and conflict, let us renew our rooted awareness and embodied experience of earth, inviting wisdom of our ancestors and the wild courage of poetic imagination.

Healing our connection to earth & ancestors.

Connecting with the Living Cultural Heritage of Ireland.

6 WEEKS

A unique and Soulful Journey

An experiential journey created for all who are called to the soul of this land

and her songs, poetry and stories,

to be nourished in your own life‘s journey.

Through the lens of “Ireland as medicine”, we  engage with that which endures, that which affirms our fundamental connection with all of Life,  with  the wisdom of our Soul,

with the earth and the full range of our emotion & creativity.

Of Healing & Heritage

Offering an embodied journey of remembering our humanity

& our connection to earth

through the Cultural Heritage of Ireland

As we bring awareness, presence and embodiment practices to bear on our process of integration and learning we learn to function beyond the mind that isolates and instead share collaboratively – in a way that affirms community and connection. The greatest gift that we can give one another is our presence.

Why does Ireland matter?

Through an embodiment of the ‘wounded healer’ archetype, Ireland has been the first country to be colonised. To re-direct our collective trajectory away from destruction and desolation of language & culture is to embrace a new story. For those whose ancestors left Ireland in search of a better life, this is an opportunity stop running away from the pain of the past and anchor deeper roots in our own shared humanity.

Imram Anama A Soul Journey

Embark on a journey of awakening and remembrance

nurturing an embodied rootedness together,

through the stories, songs and music of Ireland.

Coming together, we share our own stories and connections to the land of Ireland.

Over the five weeks that follow,

we embark on a thematic journey,

guided by the five elements:

fire, air, earth, water and ether.

Awaken wonder through the lens

of Ireland‘s resonant cultural heritage,

supported by our embodied presence as we

weave connections and community.

How does it work?

This course is of six weeks duration – equal to 40 days involving six two-hour, in person sessions online via zoom, supported by an online resource and discussion space in Sutra. Course participants can also avail of community connection calls and individual support on their journey.

Le Chéile : Together

Creating our Sacred Container

Inviting embodied presence and acknowledging all that creates a gap.

Bearing witness to the potent role of the ‘wounded healer’,

our own stories and the symbolic space that Ireland occupies.

What is your connection with Ireland?

What calls you to this journey?

Together we create a sacred container, honor shared agreements and intentions

for our time together – inviting presence, insights, and awareness for this journey.

Tine :  Fire

Of heart and hearth

From the ritual burning of bonfires in community at key festivals in the turning of the year to the keeping of hearth and home – fire brings life, light and a kindling of human warmth and companionship. Long before the advent of television or digital devices, fire alone provided illumination and a central focus for family and friends to gather, share stories, the latest news and well loved traditional songs. In this session, we explore the fire element in Irish culture, share an overview of the Celtic Calendar and a perception of Time that includes our relationship to dark and light, fullness and receptivity, togetherness and separation in turning of the year.

 Aer : Air

The air that feeds the fire

Awareness, Insight & Knowlege

In Ireland, we find a spirituality and a Christianity that includes nature and a lived perception of oneness with all of creation rooted in perennial wisdom of humanity. To face the environmental crisis we must also recognise the roots of misaligned perceptions and all that blocks our experience of immanent creator as a living presence outside of linear time – for this, we can turn to the early roots of Christianity prior to the Reformation and even the fated Synod of Whitby.

The muscular world of early Irish Christianity offers us a provocative vision.

We reflect on the legacy of illuminated manuscripts, art and poetry that are part of of early Irish wisdom traditions and remain to serve the light within all of us.

Talamh :  Land

 Strong Foundations

In this session we introduce the geography and key sacred sites of megalithic Ireland. We will explore the resonance of the 3,000 year old monument at Brú na Bóinne, and the mythology and meaning that this holds for us today. Throughout the Irish countryside, the remnants of an ancient culture echo through stones etched in the mysterious embellishments of ancient artists.

Through the potent and magical stories of Ireland’s mythology we can imagine the lives of those ancient peoples known as the Tuatha Dé Danann- “The Shining Ones”. We can marvel at their heroism, noble harmony with nature, mastery of the elements, shape shifting and unique perception of the cosmos as evidenced by these great megalithic structures.

Uisce : Water

A Flow of Emotion

As an island nation, Ireland‘s relationship to water has defined generations.

From the force and power of the great Atlantic where courageous fishermen daily sailed their wooden boats to the still inviting wisdom of thousands of ancient holy wells . Water as a sweet teacher, bearer of healing and enduring rhythm, connects us all.

In this session, we explore the theme of water as a spiritual and emotional medium

and symbolic companion for our journey.

Draíocht : Magic

Na daoine maithe – “the good people“

Ireland is a land where the veils are thin between this world and that of the liminal present.

Enduring tales of the “Otherworld”, of fairies, the banshee and the unseen realms of spirit speak of a culture animated and enchanted by that which surpasses rational understanding.

In this final session we reflect on the “draíocht” , the magic that we have drawn into our container as we take a pause at the curious tales of the wild and wonderful supernatural, the spiritual and the fantastical.

Each week includes visualisation and presencing exercises, story, song, music and poetry to invoke the land of Ireland: Drawing on decades of learning, research, insight and creative engagement with the questions of our time through the magical lens of “Ireland as Medicine”. De-colonising the mind and peeling back the layers of perception to lighten the load of history – let us experience a unified vision of wholeness with the cosmos and all of creation.

This  journey offers a re-rooting to anchor a totally different way of being in the world, reclaiming unity perception from a pious  march of mechanistic contingencies.

The Inspiration for this Course

I have been inspired by the German Artist Joseph Beuys who believed that Ireland was the place that could heal the world. This course is an exploration of that premise – it is a co-created & experiential journey where our shared humanity is a key part of the journey.

The forming of this course was to meet a request by those living in the United States of America who longed to connect with their Irish heritage in a meaningful way, to nourish the heart and focus on healing and uplifting the Soul.

I have completed a training course with Sutra entitled “Transformational Teachings Online” where the emphasis is on experiential learning, felt co-sensing and cultivating presence within a group setting. Moving beyond the ‘to do’ list and expanding consciousness to a condition of ease where we acknowledge the vastness of the cosmos and the enduring presence of what we do not know, beyond the constructs & pressures of time and mind.

My research and fieldwork for a MA in Ethnomusicology included studies of Sean nós singing and I have continued to develop songs, chants and rhymes in the Irish language. I lived in the west Kerry Gaeltacht of Corca Dhuibhne close to Cnoc Bhreanáin mt. Brandon with my daughter for three years and completed a diploma in Irish.
