Scoil Tavneena, Co. Mhaigh Eo.

A ‘Creative Schools’ project : September 2023 – March 2024.
Creative exploration : Sound, image and imagination.
A starting point for this project with the younger group was the children’s own interest in story and song . Combining an exploration of songwriting and song composition we collaborated to produce new songs. The lyrics of these songs grew out of our conversations together taking inspiration from the children’s own interests. The first song was about a Tiger and then this was followed by a song about Two Giraffes. As it was Christmas time, the final two songs composed with the children were titled Disco Penguins and Twelve days to Christmas. The children were invited to draw the characters from the songs as we were developing the stories and the lyrics. Through this visual exploration, new characters and themes emerged. It is very rewarding to observe the vivid imaginations of this age group who are unselfconscious and eager to share their ideas and thoughts.
Together with the older classes, I began working with the theme of rhythm using clapping games and body percussion. This then flowed to combine with an exploration of drawing and painting in various media and using the support of music to prompt themes and approaches to expression. During the first few weeks the children worked to create their own unique notebook and these were then integrated into our explorations of drawing techniques, observation and imaginative drawing. We also introduced drawing and print with natural found materials. The children particularly enjoyed connecting to their natural environment and working on large collaborative drawings together. We also explored ways of looking and thinking about composition and line – using a technique of cutting up and reassembling drawings to create new work.
As a culmination of working with the school, it was decided to record the children’s original songs in collaboration with Music Generation Mayo at the Ballina Arts Centre. This was a highlight of our time together an an exciting opportunity for the children to work together with a professional sound engineer, Philip Cassidy of Music Generation Mayo at The Core, Ballina Arts Centre recording studio. A group of transition year students from secondary schools around Ballina also joined us for the day to learn more about the process of recording songs.
Thanks so much to all involved, Sinéad Gallagher, Fiona Geraghty the younger class teacher, Philip Cassidy and transition year students who helped recording process from St Muredachs College, Moyne College and St Marys Secondary School.
You can listen to the songs below.

Combining both visual and auditory exploration – songs and creative art, the children were able to experience a creative process from beginning to end.

Original Songs : Children aged 4-6
Here you can read the lyrics and listen to the songs which were composed together with the younger class. The whole school then came together to learn the songs which was wonderful. Following plenty of practice there was a special day out at Ballina Arts Centre where the songs were performed and recorded together with Music Generation Mayo.
The children’s favourite song was “Disco Penguins!”. The baseline for that song was created by each of the younger children taking turns to choose the next note in sequence !
As I like to include the Irish language where possible there are some lines as Gaeilge through many of the songs where it makes sense.
Giraffe Song

Is mise an sioraf,
Is mise an sioraf is táim ard,
I am a giraffe,
I am a giraffe and I am tall.
Higher than the sky,
Higher than the Milky Way I grow
I can see you far below.
There were two giraffes,
Jilly and Billy were their names,
Peppa pig came to visit,
Were so glad she came,
Sipping lemonade, In the hot sun.
Is mise an sioraf…
There were two giraffes,
Jillly and Billy were their names,
Dancing in the sun,
They love to have some fun
Come on everyone..
Is mise an sioraf…
There were two giraffes,
Jilly and Billy were their names,
Sometimes our skin is yellow, and sometimes our tongue is blue,
And we live in the zoo,
How about you?
But we come from Africa..
From the savannah
With Rhinos and hippos and lions
flamingos and monkey
and jungles and jaguars
But we come from Africa…
From the Savanah,
with rhinos and tigers and monkeys,
flamingos and lions
and hippos and elephants.
But we come from Africa..
From the savannah
With Rhinos and hippos and lions
flamingos and monkey
and jungles and jaguars
Is mise an sioraf,
Is mise an sioraf is táim ard,
Higher than the sky,
Higher than the Milky Way I grow
I can see you far below.
Tiger Song

Tá an tíogar sa dufar, ag súil, ag súil, ag súil
There is a tiger in the jungle
Moving through the tall tall grass
He is moving, very slowly, go cúin, go ciún go ciún.
Tá ocras orm ta ocras orm tá ocras orm tá ocras orm
I am orange, I am stripey, I am big and scary and strong,
I have teeth in my jaws and big powerful claws.
Tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm
Táim mór, táim láidir
Tá fiacle I mo bhéal
Is mise an tíogar, táim láidir,
Tá mo súil ghéar
I see it moving in the bushes hiding in the tall tall grass,
Something tasty, its going to be delicious, hiding in the tall tall grass,
Mo dhinnéar mo dhinnéar mo dhinnéar mo dhinnéar,
Tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm, tá ocras orm,
Ach,
Léim amach x 7
Roar !!!
It’s very very very very very very yummy !
Blasta blast blasta blasta blast blasta blasta
Delicious delicious delicious delicious !
There’s a tiger in the jungle moving very fast
Moving through the bushes,
Hiding in the tall tall grass….
Twelve Days to Christmas

It’s twelve days to Christmas,
And dancer the reindeer is dancing,
He’s eating cookies and drinking milkshakes,
He’s flying through the sky,
Singing his favourite song,
Jingle bells , jingle bells, jingle bells, Winnie the Poo (x2)
He saw a flying snowman,
Flying up to the moon,
He’s doing a t-pose,
(Everybody do a t-pose)
Suas san aer, suas sa spéir an fear sneachta( x2 )
Dancer was always stealing
He’s greedy and cheeky
Eating all of Rudolph’s food
Ice cream, peanut butter, jam, oranges, apples and carrots!
The big snowman came down and got all of Rudolph’s food back
He said “BOO! – Dancer I’ve got you!
Why are you stealing Rudolphs food ? “
Réinfhia, Réinfhia ná bí ag goideadh bia ( x2)
Well there’s a magical lake, with bread and milkshake,
And broccoli and spinach and beans that make you fart, and potatoes and veg sticks and chips.
There’s a magical lake,
The Reindeer’s secret lake where they go to get food for their fridge and everybody knows it but Dancer.
When the snowman found the secret lake he said
Come on reindeers its a mistake
Its not fair
you’ve gotta share!
Suas san ser suas sa spéir an fear sneachta (x 2)
Now, there’s a magical lake,
With bread and milkshakes
Where the reindeer’s go to get food for their fridge
And everybody knows it even dancer.
It’s twelve days to Christmas,
And dancer the reindeer is dancing,
He’s eating cookies and drinking milkshakes,
He’s flying through the sky,
Singing his favourite song,
Jingle bells , jingle bells, jingle bells, Winnie the Poo (x2)
